I received my Master of Arts in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. I moved to Australia in November of 2016. I am looking forward to being able to serve the mental health community in Australia.
I have one and a half years of post graduation work as a counselor. I was employed by an agency that received referrals from the Department of Human Services. This agency specialized in working with family violence and sexual abuse cases. I also have a passion for working with women and girls on topics related to self-empowerment, self-compassion, and learning to love themselves again.
At the heart of my counselling approach is person centered therapy. This is something that comes naturally to me, and I have been told that my greatest strength as a counselor is my calm and accepting way of being. i view the relationship with the client as the most important element in my practice. I believe that if I have not created a space where the client feels heard, understood, and validated, then any technique or intervention outside of this is inconsequential.
Another core belief that helps me design my approach is the belief that the client has the answers they need within themselves and I am a tool to assist them in remembering. In my personal journey, I have incorporated a mind, body and spirit approach. I practice meditation and yoga daily, which allows me to connect to my won truth. I wish the same for each one of my clients. I frequently utilize mindfulness exercises that assists clients in reconnecting with their body, and learn, maybe for the first time, the ability to self-soothe. I have found that once a client is able to relax their nervous system, they are in a more empowered position to heal, learn, and grow.
