Anxiety Disorders: Differential Diagnosis and Treatment
Objective:
OPD Points: 5
Outline:
The speaker discusses, in detail, how the following disorders present clinically: Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Health Anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Burnout and Depression. She argues that there is considerable symptom overlap among the different disorders, as well as with depression and/or burnout and that many of the differences may be missed, as the patient may be reluctant to discuss it for fear of stigmatization, or may be avoiding facing the issue in order to avoid things that trigger the anxiety reaction instead. She feels that it is crucial to make an accurate diagnosis, as each disorder requires a different intervention. She gives helpful and practical ways to notice each disorder. The speaker then presents a case study of a teen that she saw in therapy. The case illustrates how, with continued therapy, a number of anxiety disorders presented and how they were impacted by the system.Lastly, Colinda discusses the various interventions available. She focuses on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and outlines some of the techniques that are used when treating clients who present with these issues. She also talks about the value of medication and how it may help the treatment process.
