This 2-day skills-based workshop is for allied health professionals, social workers, psychologists (not seeking PsyBA supervisor accreditation), and clinicians working within counselling and/or health care provider roles. Professionals working in mental health, paediatric, child, adolescent, adult and aged care are suited to attend this course. Previous participants have included those working in private practice, community health, hospitals, in-patient units and NGO services.

The workshop provides participants with a thorough understanding of the principles and practice of effective clinical supervision. You will learn how to set up and conduct effective and supportive supervision, learn how to give feedback and evaluate supervision incorporating best practice standards and reflective practice. Participants will benefit from the opportunity to discuss case scenarios reviewing ethical challenges and how to manage, support and promote supervisee self-care.

Comprehensive resources and handouts provide participants with a clear theoretical framework on how to set up, deliver and evaluate supervision.

DAY 2: Morning session:

  • Tools for effective supervision interventions (e.g., Supervision triangle, notable incident; 7 eyed model)

  • Functions of feedback and evaluation in practice
  • How to give effective feedback

Small group practice sessions include setting up supervision; identifying learning goals, reflective practice; providing feedback and evaluation in supervision. Small group discussion groups include working with cultural and diversity presentations and ethical dilemmas in practice. Presenter Qualifications:

Sam Vasta BA, B Soc Studies, M Arts (Counselling)

Sam has worked in public community mental health services for over 35 years as a senior clinician and Service Manager. He holds both Social Worker and Counselling Psychologist degrees and has a wealth of clinical experience and supervision practice in a range of service settings. These range from specialist services for young people experiencing mental health problems to clients experiencing enduring mental illness, as well as drug and alcohol issues, complex trauma and cross-cultural problems. As a Service Manager, Sam supervises health practitioners and team leaders, often involving complex clinical scenarios and risk presentations, in addition to supporting and debriefing staff following critical incidents. Sam is a PsyBA Accredited Supervisor trainer for psychologists and provides accredited supervisor training for PACFA (Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia) and ACA (Australian Counselling Association).  He lectures across Australia and Singapore and provides in-house supervisor training for mental health and allied health staff. Currently, Sam also provides individual and group supervision to a range of practitioners across various government, NGO and private sector settings. Given his background and extensive experience, he also offers consultation, supervision and mentoring to Team Leaders and Managers to support them to survive and grow in challenging leadership positions.
