This interactive workshop presents findings of a four-year research exploring the needs of grieving Muslims and the support systems available. It provides educational evidence-based theory and equips mental health professionals and supporting stakeholders with strategies for exceptional applied transcultural care for Muslims in Australia. Matters of culture and faith play a prominent role amongst people of faith, such as Muslims, when going through various types of losses. Culturally and spiritually informed practice is crucial to avoid:

  • Misdiagnosis
  • Misinterpretation
  • Inadequate/inappropriate support

By the end of this workshop, you will gain insights into grief support & transcultural practices from practitioners & religious leaders, with an emphasis on integrating transcendence into therapy.  You will be empowered to address cultural and faith-related challenges within through evidence-based interventions & collaborative exploration across sectors & support networks.

The workshop ultimately offers a versatile framework applicable to various faith systems & CALD groups, encouraging transcultural competency, cultural humility, spiritually sensitive care.

 

Key Learning Objectives / Outcomes:

This workshop integrates both didactic teaching and interactive activities. I will draw on your clinical expertise and lived experiences, fostering self-reflection and collaborative practice in transculturally informed care. We will explore strategies for supporting clients through meaning crises, engaging in philosophical discussions relevant to therapy. You will also have the opportunity to refine your skills in providing humanistic care, including how to thoughtfully address culture and spirituality within the therapeutic setting. Developing heterogenous cultural literacy

Pandemic’s impact on loss and migrant/CALD communities

  Structure: This material is most effective when delivered over two sessions, spaced one week apart, due to its depth and complexity. Each session is 3 hours. The break between sessions allows time for the content to be processed and absorbed. It also offers an opportunity for self-reflection, time to formulate questions for discussion, and a chance to approach practice with greater confidence, ultimately enhancing the learning experience. This workshop will run for 3 cycles. You have a choice of AM and PM sessions per cycle, to allow for flexibility. Dr Amirah Shah

Presenter Qualifications:

Dr. Amirah Shah is a psychotherapist, educator, and supervisor based in Brisbane, specializing in grief, trauma, transcultural care, and spirituality. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and business, a master’s degree in counselling, and a PhD. Amirah is also a certified adult learning instructor. Her research focused on bereavement, meaning-making, and transcultural support for Muslims in Queensland, addressing spirituality, community, existential crises, and posttraumatic growth. With over 12 years of experience in the mental health industry across Singapore and Australia since 2009, Amirah’s professional background includes providing counselling and therapeutic support to culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and refugee communities, working with local imams, end-of-life care, juvenile youth work with Muslim boys mandated by the court, and conducting psychoeducation workshops for students, educators, and various health professionals. As a lecturer and trainer, she teaches topics such as cultural competency, cultural humility, trauma-informed care, spiritually sensitive care, and reflective practice. Amirah runs her private practice and hosts a mental health podcast called Science of the Soul. She is also the author of two publications: a children’s book titled The Truck Family (ISBN: 9781669886754), which helps families navigate grief, and The Culturally Informed Trauma Workbook series for individuals and practitioners.
