Motivational Interviewing (MI), with its client centered focus, can be a valuable addition for increasing client engagement and overall responsiveness to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). While CBT is viewed as a methodology for providing specific tools to help people make changes in distorted/exaggerated thinking patterns and self-defeating behaviours, the emphasis of MI is on eliciting the client’s own motivations regarding change goals. MI discussions typically focus on why and how one might change specific behaviour. The benefits of integrating MI and CBT lies in the potential to enhance engagement, treatment adherence, and reduce dropouts. In this advanced training course, you will become familiar with several MI-CBT integration strategies:(a) sequential — MI as prelude to CBT(b) stylistic – blending elements of both models to produce a harmonious interaction, and(c) thinking focused discussions – MI conversations to increase motivation for changing dysfunctional cognitions.Provided that all requirements are met, including 100% attendance and successful completion of an online assessment the Certificate of Attendance for Intergrating Motivational Interviewing with CBT – advanced will be awarded at the conclusion of the course. The assessment of the content of the course must be undertaken to enable the awarding of OPD points.
