For many, the quality of their everyday life is influenced by a strong need to be and do ‘perfect’. This results in increased anxiety which impacts on the quality of life for all to varying degrees of intensity. We will look at breaking the cycle of perfectionism and explore skills to approach life without the imposition of ‘perfect’.

Have you ever felt that you always need to do something perfectly? Perfectionism is an expectation that you or another person should DO things perfectly – however this imposition of ‘perfection’ contributes to our experience of anxiety and consequently affect our personal beliefs, attitudes and engagement in life Examples of perfectionism include but are not limited to:Having to maintain a flawless image to othersOnly speaking when you know you won’t be corrected, stutter or sound stupidAvoid making mistakes and avoid engaging in tasks or interactions you feel you may make a mistake with}Having to winOnly engaging in aspects of life you feel you are good atFeel anxious when something is new, challenging, perceived to be unachievable React or feel rejected when you receive a correction of any sort Not wanting to ask for help or acknowledge your weaknesses Feeling like your efforts are not as good as others/or what it ‘should’ be Not receiving any positive feedback for your work There can be an endless list of behaviours classified under perfectionism, albeit no matter the presentation, the pressure of needing to be perfect is negatively impacting upon us all Fuelled by a fear of rejection, perfectionism is a hidden epidemic impacting the mental wellness of children, teenagers and adults, however perfectionism is not often spoken about In this workshop presentation we will bring awareness, insight and understanding to the hidden epidemic Tanya Curtis calls perfectionism Our quality of our everyday lives influenced by the need to be and do ‘perfect’, results in increased anxiety impacts on the quality of life for all in varying degrees of intensity We will look at breaking the cycle of perfectionism and explore skills to approach life without the imposition of ‘perfect’ Breaking the cycle of perfectionism requires strategies that embrace our true role in life – being a forever student willing to embrace every life lesson presented in our unique classroom of life
