Family violence is a complex issue which requires opportunity for perpetrators to engage in intervention to lessen the likelihood/impact of their abusive behaviours.When a perpetrator, however, experiences a developmental disorder, consideration of how traits of the relevant disorder are critical in both assessment and intervention.The experience of disability and traits related to disability can create a multifaceted presentation which needs to be understood from each aspect for effective assessment and intervention. This webinar presentation aims to provide an understanding of what these additional factors are and how they can impact assessment as well as important consideration for intervention programs.

Yvonne Maxwell has over ten years’ experience working with individuals who have a disability in both direct care and clinical roles in addition to over nine years’ experience of working with individuals (with and without a disability) who perpetrate offending behaviour and have/are at risk of entering the justice system. She has extensive experience in writing reports related to risk and treatment needs for individuals who are mandated under the Disability Act 2006, Crimes Mental Impairment and Unfitness to be Tried Act 1997 and the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.Yvonne also provides clinical support and engages in training sessions for psychologists/allied health professionals and disability support teams who support complex clients. She engages in direct client work with individuals who perpetrate violence, and this has included provision of individual and group-based programs specific to sexual offending, violent offending and family violence treatment programs for intellectually disabled and non-intellectually disabled offenders.
