In this talk, Prof. Carveth takes a look at Freud’s view of human sexuality and human nature, specifically at Freud’s view of the human being as fundamentally an animal driven by sexual drives which shape personality and behaviours. Carveth then looks at the views of existentialists, including Erich Fromm, who view the human being as departing from nature with a mind capable of symbolic thinking. Carveth then looks at how human sexuality is structured by stories/narratives rather than only by biological drives.
