The Origins of Mentalising & Implications for Attachment, Personality & Psychotherapy - Part 3
Objective:
OPD Points: 5
Outline:
This is the third and final part of the series on the establishment of mentalising.Having described the mechanisms that occur between the infant and adult partner to establish affect regulation, mentalising and attentional control, the speaker contrasts the differences that result from insecure attachment pairs.
Content:
A detailed illustration is provided to show what it is that can happen in the intimate relationship of infant/child and parent that might interfere with mentalising capacities being established. Clear links are made between these difficulties and the establishment of personality difficulties on a continuum to include personality disorders. General comparisons are offered to explain the differences between the clusters of disorders of borderline, dependent and histrionic personality organisations and contrasting with narcissistic, schizoid and antisocial clusters. These ideas are informed by the work of Anthony Bateman and Peter Fonagy which have led to the development of Mentalization Based Treatments (MBT). This approach is discrete from but has overlaps with the treatment approach developed by Marsha Linehan of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) which is also consistent with this theoretical framework.
