This talk identifies the unique requirements of different kinds of psycho-legal assessments. Issues arising in care and contact, children, criminal capacity, trauma and serious injury assessments are discussed. Cross-cutting similarities that apply to all assessments are identified, such as measures that guard against bias. The talk ends with a short discussion on report-writing.

Presenter Qualifications:

Juana Horn is a developmental psychodynamic clinical psychologist who has been in private practice for about 30 years. She has extensive experience in a range of psychological assessments, and has specialised in many different kinds of psycho-legal assessments over the last thirteen years, including in family matters, such as care and contact, relocation and adoption, in criminal work including rape, torture and theft, in the assessment of criminal capacity in children and adults, in sexual and other forms of abuse of children, and in serious injury assessments. She is keen to share the lessons she has learned on the road to becoming a provider of expert psychological opinion, in the hope that this will assist practitioners to develop the necessary confidence to engage in this challenging and stressful, but also gratifying and fulfilling ‘psychodetective’ work.
