Working with Young People in Groups
Description:
OPD Points: 5
Key Learning Objectives / Outcomes:
In this workshop, we will focus on how to think about, structure, and run counseling groups for children and adolescents. I will bring my experience leading hundreds of groups for youth between the ages of 10 – 13 years old. I will also be sharing aspects of a curriculum I have developed with a colleague entitled "Belong and Be You" (in press, Routledge). Additionally, I will show how this curriculum links directly to what we know are the foundational developmental tasks of young adolescents. Participants in the workshop will gain a better understanding of child development based on the latest brain research as well as a "hands on" understanding of how to best engage youth in groups: Enhancing their social connections with others while helping them be confidently unique as individuals.
