Part 9: Catherine Chen’s Post Graduation Journey–What life is like!

As November draws to a close, it has been a month filled with growth and invaluable learning experiences. This month, I had the opportunity to attend the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) 2024 Inaugural Symposium online, where a diverse line-up of speakers shared insights on critical topics in the field of mental health. These sessions sparked deep reflection and inspiration, reinforcing the important work we do as counsellors. Of all the valuable presentations, two in particular stood out to me.

One such presentation was by Dr Christine Suniti Bhat on Online Bullying and Victimisation, which highlighted the rise of cyberbullying and its emotional toll on youth. She stressed the urgent need for prevention strategies to protect young people in our increasingly digital world. Complementing this, Themis Antony’s session on Beyond Blue’s Strategy for Early Intervention explored evidence-based approaches to address emerging mental health challenges. Her focus on early intervention and building resilience emphasised the power of proactive support in fostering community wellbeing.

Following the Symposium, I had the privilege of attending an in-person guest lecture, where Dr Christine Suniti Bhat expanded on her earlier session by discussing the psychological capital of both clients and counsellors. One of the key takeaways was the dual role counsellors play—not only as advocates for their clients but also as stewards of the profession. She highlighted the importance of cultivating resilience and optimism throughout the therapeutic journey. As counsellors, we are often witnesses to our clients' pain and trauma, yet we also have the privilege of witnessing their strength and growth. It was a powerful reminder of why I chose this profession: to walk alongside individuals as they journey towards healing and hope.

Reflecting on these experiences, I was reminded of a quote by Judith Harrington that beautifully captures the heart of our work:

“What are some of the qualitative rewards? It is a privilege to walk with persons in their suffering, to sit for hours at a time with the magic and the mystery of the human condition, to be continually intellectually stimulated and emotionally stirred, to be energised when clients make strides or experience victories over their circumstances, and to regularly find joy in one’s work. May everyone have such an impressive benefits package in their life’s work.”

This quote resonates deeply with me. While there are moments of heartache and challenge, the opportunity to witness a client’s resilience and transformation is a reward like no other. It is an honour to be entrusted with their stories, to hold space for their pain, and to celebrate their victories.
