A practical one-day training workshop using projective techniques developed in Australia over the last thirty years to enhance client communication, by Mark and Helen, the founders of Expressive Therapies Australia. Learn to use a collection of miniatures to support clients to open up, symbolise their inner world, talk about self and resolve issues. Symbols can be used to increase communication, activate creativity, clarify cognition, process emotions and enhance problem-solving. In this innovative experiential program, you will gain confidence in using miniatures with art, with movement, with life narratives, with emotion-focused processes, and with somatic awareness. About Symbol Work: ·         Generates catalysts for therapeutic conversations ·         Allows the session topics and format to be co-created ·         The focus of the activity tends to be on a specific issue or theme ·         Supports client to discuss explicit situations and feelings ·         Encourages non-threatening, open discussion ·         Supports sharing of information that will assist the counselling process ·         Provides markers for further discussion This program is based on material in Mark and Helen’s book: Sandplay & Symbol Work, 2001.

Key Learning Objectives / Outcomes:

At the completion of this training day participants will be able to: ·         Integrate Symbol Work into counselling with young clients ·         Utilise symbol language within counselling ·         Integrate creative arts approaches into a treatment plan ·         Construct sessions that support client openness and communication

Presenter Qualifications:

Ph.D., M. Ed.(BEM); Dip T.; Cert HB & TP; Dip. ERC. Mark was a primary school teacher, then founded a remedial reading clinic. He has completed further studies in Transpersonal Psychotherapy with Dr Stanislav Grof, a 2-year Diploma in Emotional Release Counselling, and holds a Masters in Education, majoring in behaviour management, and a PhD, researching multiple intelligence theory in counselling.
Mark has been conducting training courses in Expressive Therapies and Sandplay Therapy around Australia since 1989. He has over 28 years of experience as a counsellor and counselling supervisor, and has been a Lecturer and Senior Lecturer in counselling at the University of Notre Dame Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and the Australian College of Applied Professions. He is the Co-Director of Expressive Therapies Australia. Mark is the co-author of Emotional First-Aid For Children (1991), Emotional Release For Children (2004), Sandplay & Symbol Work (2001), and Using Expressive Arts to Work with Mind, Body and Emotion (2009). He is also the author of Emotional Healing & Self-Esteem – Inner-Life Skills for Children and Adolescents (2004) and for adults: From Healing to Awakening (1991) and The Healing Journey (1997).  He is the author of the groupwork program for schools and agencies: The Innerspace Program – Emotional Literacy for Student Wellbeing and Resilience (2006).
