In this one-day experiential professional development workshop you will learn multiple creative arts-based and mindfulness ways to support young clients’ self-awareness and discover how their sensations, emotions, thoughts and behaviours are linked. The focus will be on Expressive Therapies additions to the therapist’s toolkit, including therapeutic writing, use of art, use of miniatures and somatic focus. The multiple ways ET can support integrative CBT approaches will be discussed. A number of worksheets created by the directors of ETA will be provided for: functional analysis, articulation of beliefs, problem solving and goal-setting. Relaxation activities as supports for anger management will be explored.

Key Learning Objectives / Outcomes:

At the completion of this training day participants will be able to: ·         Apply action-based creative arts approaches to enhance CBT with young clients ·         Confidently use miniatures to support clients’ conversational clarity ·         Integrate therapeutic writing interventions in counselling ·         Understand and apply the use of visual media to support self-awareness ·         Understand and apply a range of somatic-focused activities within therapy.

Presenter Qualifications:

Ph.D., M.Ed.(BEM); Dip T.; Cert HB & TP; Dip. ERC. Mark was a primary school teacher, then founded a remedial reading clinic. He spent several years studying Transpersonal Psychotherapy with Dr Stanislav Grof, and completed a two-year Diploma in Emotional Release Counselling. He holds a Masters in Education, majoring in behaviour management, and a PhD, researching multiple intelligence theory in counselling.

Mark has been conducting training courses in Expressive Therapies and Sandplay Therapy around Australia for over 30 years, and in South-East Asia for 23 years. Mark has over 28 years of experience as a counsellor and counselling supervisor, and lectured in counselling at the University of Notre Dame Australia, the University of Adelaide, the University of the Sunshine Coast, and for the Australian College of Applied Professions. He is Co-Director of Expressive Therapies Australia.

Mark is the co-author of Emotional First-Aid for Children (1991), Emotional Release for Children (2004), Sandplay & Symbol Work (2001), and Using Expressive Arts to Work with Mind, Body and Emotion (2009). He is also the author of Emotional Healing & Self-Esteem – Inner-Life Skills for Children and Adolescents (2004) and for adults: From Healing to Awakening (1991) and The Healing Journey (1997). He is the author of the Expressive Therapies groupwork program:  Innerspace  (2006).
