Prue Longstaff – Child & Family Counsellor | Psychotherapist
As a dedicated child and family counsellor, I specialise in supporting children, parents, and caregivers in navigating emotional challenges, developing resilience, and fostering positive relationships. With a strong background in child development, neurodiversity, and mental health, I take a compassionate, evidence-based approach to therapy that empowers families to create lasting change.
I am a registered counsellor with the Australian Counselling Association and have extensive experience working with children in educational and therapeutic settings. My work is grounded in a developmental perspective—recognising that emotional skills, just like academic skills, need to be taught, nurtured, and practiced.
In my counselling practice, I provide a safe and supportive space where children can explore their emotions, learn practical coping strategies, and build confidence in managing life’s challenges. I recognise that seeking support can feel overwhelming, particularly for parents who may worry that something is "wrong" with their child. My approach removes stigma by normalising emotional development and framing counselling as an opportunity for growth rather than a sign of struggle.
One of my key approaches is emotion coaching—a method that helps children understand and regulate their feelings in a way that makes sense to them. Using relatable, real-world strategies, I equip children and parents with a roadmap for emotional well-being.
My services include:
- Individual counselling for children and adolescents
- Parent coaching and support
- Anxiety and emotional regulation programs
- Assessments and screeners to guide intervention
- NDIS-funded therapeutic support for children with disabilities
I offer both in-person sessions in Mansfield, Victoria, and online counselling Australia-wide. While I understand that some families are hesitant about online therapy, I have seen firsthand how effective and engaging it can be when delivered with the right approach.
Beyond one-on-one counselling, I am passionate about delivering parent workshops, skills-based programs, and group interventions to make emotional wellbeing more accessible to families. I also provide measurement-based care, using psychological assessments to track progress and tailor support to each child's needs.
My ultimate goal is to give children the tools they need to thrive emotionally—helping them feel understood, capable, and resilient. If you're looking for a compassionate and practical approach to supporting your child’s emotional wellbeing, I’d love to help.
