Registered Counsellor
Serena Hockey
Languages Spoken:
- English
Serena is a Christian counsellor with a Graduate Diploma in Counselling, and a MA in Applied Developmental Psychology. She especially has an interest in working with those from cross-cultural or expat backgrounds, children, teens, parents, foster and adoptive families, and those from ministry backgrounds.
While Serena is a Christian, you do not have to be a Christian to work with Found Counselling. Serena respects people from all backgrounds and beliefs.
Counseling sessions are online lasting 50 minutes. Clients are able to attend appointments from anywhere in the world except the USA and Canada, so long as they have a good internet connection and a device with a working camera and microphone.
Serena draws from CBT (cognitive-behavioral therapy), which is evidence-based. It focuses on how our thoughts as well as our behaviors can interact and affect each other, our emotions, mental and physiological health. CBT works well for many common life issues, such as insomnia or anxiety. Serena also has knowledge of and may draw from other theories, including but not limited to Adlerian, psychodynamic (which was foundational for much of attachment theory today!), and solutions focused. However, again, her focus will likely be CBT, depending on the issues on which you would like to work.
Serena hopes to give you the tools to walk out your freedom, enabling you to live a more fulfilled life. She believes in equipping you with your own tool-belt so that you will be able to handle situations not just now, but in the future.
Serena has an interest in and has explored the effects of trauma on human functioning and brain development, and is continually working on becoming more informed. She is actively pursuing more education in trauma therapy and family therapy. Some influences she has been learning from the past 12 years are Dr. Karyn Purvis of TBRI, Dr. Mona DelaHooke (of Brain-Body Parenting), Dr. Amy Wenzel (The Beck Intitute), and Dr. Abi Blakeslee. Serena also has an interest in working with people with neurodevelopmental differences ranging from ADHD and autism to cerebral palsy and others.
