Description:

OPD Points: 5

This webinar will consider the wide range of experiences that school community members may experience in relation to grief and trauma responses. A socioecological approach will be used to explore the way in which these responses may be understood for children and young people and their families, particularly within a school context. The ways in which school environments offer a unique opportunity to prevent and counter the impacts of childhood trauma will be explored.

The role of schools in creating a physically and psychologically safe environment as well as supporting students experiencing grief and trauma responses will be explored. This will include an overview of research relating to trauma-informed ways of working and trauma-sensitive frameworks.

The role of teachers and school staff as well as mental health professionals will be considered in relation to how to provide support in a multi-tiered approach across the school community. Trauma-informed teacher wellbeing will also be considered alongside a focus on self-care and building hope and resilience for school staff and mental health professionals.
