Behaviour challenges and mental health symptomology used to be considered a rarity, but no longer with now both presenting more frequently in today’s society  We have an endless supply of strategies available to support across many facets of life including formal supports from allied health professions, self-help, medical support and informal supports from family friends etc; however the reported and experienced incidents appear to be getting escalating, not lessening  What is happening? Is it possible that our more frequently accepted strategies to manage behaviour challenges and mental health symptomology offer at best a relief from the current life challenge, but do not offer skills building strategies for LASTING BEHAVIOUR CHANGE  Relief strategies are simply forms of treatment that offer a person a reprieve from feeling the symptoms in their body they would prefer not be feeling  Relief strategies come in many forms and are commonly accepted as successful in the behaviour change and mental health industry as measures of success can be based on short-term results  Relief strategies serve a purpose, absolutely, but at best these strategies offer short-term change for any person and rarely lasting change This presentation and interactive workshop will discuss the short and long-term impacts of two different approaches when addressing behaviour challenges and mental health symptomology – Relief Strategies vs Skills building for lasting behaviour change.
