Emily Hirshman-Smith, MA Couns, Ad Dip, M.A.C.A (level 4) Counsellor and Psychotherapist Emily works with couples and individuals, on both a short and long term basis. She has over 15 years experience, and specialises in relationships, addiction, sexual health, anxiety and depression. Emily is originally from the UK, and worked in London at a Women’s refuge dealing with victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence, as a Youth Counsellor in Sydney co-facilitating group therapy sessions for teenage Mums, and with adolescents dealing with sexual abuse and drug addiction. She joined Sexual and Reproductive Health WA in 2011, and set up private practice in 2013. Emily's approach is Humanistic Integrative Psychodynamic. This includes Psychoanalysis, Attachment Theory, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis and Person Centred. Emily uses a variety of techniques, in the belief that there is no ‘one size fits all’ approach, and clients will have different needs, based on their presenting issues and history. What unites these modalities is Emily’s belief that the relationship between Therapist and Client is central to the work, and much emphasis is placed on creating a safe environment and building trust. This approach also stresses the importance of the unconscious and past experience in shaping current behaviour. The client is encouraged to talk about childhood relationships with parents, siblings and significant others, and Emily focuses on the dynamics of the client/therapist relationship. The psychodynamic approach is derived from psychoanalysis, but usually provides a quicker solution to emotional problems. Emily's areas of expertise are: • Relationships • Depression and Anxiety • Sexual abuse • Sexual dysfunction • Desire discrepancy • Couples Counselling • Sexual addiction • Unplanned Pregnancy • Post Termination Counselling Emily does daytime and after hours appointments. She can be contacted for an appointment on: 0406 076887 or emilyhirshman@gmail.com
