You are invited to take part in this PhD research project with researchers from Whitley College & The University of Divinity, which is aiming to understand how relationships are formed, maintained and in particular, how values emerge out of life stories and their impact later in life.
What does participation in this research involve?
After reading this information sheet and signing a consent form you will meet our researcher and do an interview about your life and values. The interview will take approximately 1 hour but you are welcome to take longer if you want to. Participation in this research is voluntary and you can withdraw at any time. We would like to record the interview with your permission.
What will the interview be like?
You do not have to answer any questions that you are uncomfortable with, and you can say as much or as little about the topics as you like. At the end of the interview, there will be time for a debrief. If you have any worries or concerns about what you have said in the interview, you will be able to contact the researcher on the number provided at the end of this information sheet to talk about these and how to fix any issues, including the option to withdraw some or all of the information provided, up to two weeks after the interview.
What are the risks and benefits of participation?
This is a chance to tell your unique life story openly and without guidance. We hope that you find this both an interesting and insightful experience. However, there is always the potential for getting upset when remembering past situations. If you are feeling uncomfortable or upset please let the researcher know and you can have a tea break, reschedule or even stop the interview if necessary. In the unlikely event of disclosure of criminal or illegal activity, confidentiality may be limited. Otherwise, only the researcher and their supervisor will have access to your story and full confidentiality will be maintained. When the research is written up, no individual will be identified, and only general patterns will be discussed.
What happens if my partner/ex-partner is participating in this research?
Nothing that you tell the researcher will be told to your partner or ex-partner and anything that they say will not be told to you.
Who will have access to the research findings?
Findings from the research may be published at academic conferences and in the psychological literature. A PhD thesis will also be generated. Everything that you tell us will be confidential and no individual will be identified and only snippets published.
