What To Do If You See Distressing Content Online

In today’s digital world, many of us spend a significant amount of time online for work, connection and information. While online spaces can be valuable and enriching, they can also expose us to distressing content, often unexpectedly. Violent or graphic material may appear in social media feeds, video platforms, news coverage or search results, sometimes without warning.

Exposure to confronting online content can have emotional and psychological impacts. It can trigger fear, anxiety, intrusive thoughts, distress or re-traumatisation, particularly for people with lived experience of violence or trauma.

Based on guidance from the Australian Government’s eSafety Commissioner, there are practical steps you and your clients can take if you come across distressing content online.

  1. Report the content directly to the platform

Most social media platforms have reporting tools specifically for violent, graphic or harmful material. Reporting helps platforms review the content and remove it where appropriate, reducing the risk of further harm to others.

  1. Report it to eSafety

You can report serious online harm directly to the eSafety Commissioner via Report online harm. The complaints process is open to everyone in Australia.

  1. Avoid sharing or reposting distressing material

While it can be tempting to share confronting content to raise awareness or express outrage, reposting graphic material can unintentionally spread harm. Re-exposure increases the risk of trauma, both for yourself and for others who may see the content without warning.

  1. Use safety settings and content filters

Most devices, platforms and streaming services offer safety settings, restricted modes and content filters. For families, parental controls are an important tool for protecting children and young people online.
