Living in a regional community has many advantages – strong community connection, a slower pace of life and a closer connection to nature. But when life becomes overwhelming, it can sometimes feel like professional mental health support is out of reach.
------------------------------------
Whether the impact of natural disasters, financial pressures, isolation, or the stresses of everyday life, people living in regional areas experience similar mental health concerns as those in metropolitan cities. Yet, many Australians still believe they have limited options due to geography when it comes to finding support.
------------------------------------
The Australian Counselling Association’s (ACA) 2024 Counselling Workforce Census tells a different story.
------------------------------------
------------------------------------
Counselling is making a difference in regional Australia
Our research found that demand for counselling services is higher in regional Australia than in capital cities, highlighting a growing need for support across the country.
Importantly, the Census also shows that counsellors are already embedded within these communities.
------------------------------------
Forty per cent of ACA registered counsellors work in regional areas, while another 9% practise in rural and remote Australia. Together, almost half of the ACA counselling workforce is supporting Australians outside major metropolitan areas.
------------------------------------
Furthermore, of those professionals, more than fifty per cent have capacity to welcome new clients. This means many people seeking support may be able to access counselling sooner than they realise.

Local counsellors understand your challenges
Counsellors who live and work in regional or rural areas have a unique insight into the struggles these communities face. They see the deep impact that weather events, isolation, workforce shortages and all else that comes with regional life can have on families and communities. In reaching out for support, these professionals come with an understanding of your stressors.
------------------------------------
Counsellors can offer support for a wide range of life’s challenges and many mental health hurdles that those in isolated communities may face. According to the Census, the most common reasons people seek counselling include:
- Anxiety, stress and depression

- Communication difficulties
- Grief and loss
- Childhood and adolescent concerns
- Addiction and disability-related support.
Whatever your personal circumstances may be, there is someone available to listen, and offer professional, evidence-based guidance.
